The Law & Prosecution Department, Government of Gilgit-Baltistan, is the principal legal institution of the Government responsible for providing legal advice, conducting government litigation, drafting and vetting legislation, supervising prosecution services, and coordinating legislative business before the Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly.

The Department plays a central role in ensuring that the actions, decisions, and policies of the Government are consistent with the Constitution, applicable laws, and established legal principles. It advises Administrative Departments on legal questions, interpretation of laws, statutory instruments, and matters involving civil and criminal litigation.

In accordance with the Gilgit-Baltistan Rules of Business, 2009, the Department is entrusted with the preparation and scrutiny of Bills, Ordinances, Rules, Regulations, Notifications, and other legislative instruments. It also coordinates the Government's legislative programme, facilitates the processing of Bills through the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly, and undertakes the legal formalities required for their enactment and publication.

The Department is further responsible for conducting litigation involving the Government, supervising Public Prosecutors and Government Law Officers, managing matters relating to the Advocate General, Government Pleaders, and Special Counsel, and coordinating legal affairs with constitutional institutions.

Through professional legal services, effective prosecution, sound legislative drafting, and institutional coordination, the Department contributes to strengthening the rule of law, promoting good governance, protecting public interest, and enhancing public confidence in the administration of justice throughout Gilgit-Baltistan.
